Abang Johari to unveil digitisation plan for Sarawak's economy next month

PETRA JAYA: Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Abang Openg is expected to unveil a roadmap towards developing a sustainable digital economy ecosystem in Sarawak next month.

Abang Johari will reveal his digitisation plan of Sarawak’s economy during the International ICT, Infrastructure and Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2017 themed “Transforming Sarawak through Digital Economy”.

State Secretary Tan Sri Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani said IDECS, aimed at creating greater awareness on digital economy among the local business community, is the first of such conference to be held in the state.

“The conference translate the chief minister’s vision to embark on digital economy in Sarawak.

“He will deliver a big mandate during the opening of this conference.

“He is expected to roll out the deliverables, the plans and roadmap to promote the growth of digitised type of economy,” he told reporters at the Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

Although there are many electronic-government (e-government) services in Sarawak, Morshidi said there were still avenues for the state government to expand and grow in term of digital delivery services.

“The state government also wanted to transform the way we engage and support businesses, enabling the private sector to flourish in a conducive and reasonable protected economic environment.

“Formulating the right framework and policy in place is important helping Sarawak to spearhead more initiatives, which will create more opportunities for the state government and the private sector.

“These opportunities will in-turn benefit the people in Sarawak,” he added.

Morshidi said 18 prominent international speakers would be featured during the two-day long conference beginning Apr 3 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.

Among the speakers included pioneer of digital economy, Don Tapscott, Neuroware.oi co-founder and chief executive officer, Mark Smiley, Grab Malaysia country head Sean Goh and LAZADA Malaysia chief executive officer Hans Peter-Ressel.

He said more than 1,500 delegates are expected from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines are expected to attend the conference.

Delegates are subjected to a fee of RM1,500 and USD600 for participants from Malaysia and outside the country respectively.
