Even one Socso contribution makes you eligible for benefits

KUALA TERENGGANU: Even if you have only contributed once to the Social Security Organisation (Socso) during your working life, you are eligible for medical benefits.

This is something many contributors may be unaware of, said Socso’s state director, Norihan Ibrahim.

Many people, especially in rural areas, had given up hope of ever receiving benefits after their contributions lapsed, thinking that they are no longer eligible.

“On the contrary, once you have contributed even once in your lifetime, you can apply to be considered for medical assistance.

“In some cases, eligible contributors can even seek a pension at an amount to be determined according to their situation, age and condition.

“But they must submit the relevant documents, like medical support letters, when filing for financial assistance,” she said.

Norihan said this after a surprise visit to the home of RTM driver Mokhtar Said, 57, whose left leg was amputated below the knee following severe diabetes, three months ago.

The visit to Mokhtar’s government quarters in Jalan Tekukur, in the city centre, was arranged by his boss, Terengganu broadcasting director, Nordin Sulaiman.

Also present were Nordin’s deputy, Shukri Mohamad, Socso’s customer service and complaints manager, Mohd. Sabri Ramli and Mokhtar’s wife, Madzena Abu Bakar, 55.

Norihan said that they are working on developing an artificial limb for Mokhtar. In the meantime, Socso provided him with crutches and a wheelchair to allow him ease of movement.

Nordin said Mokhtar, who had previously contributed to Socso, but is now a civil servant eligible for pension upon retirement at 60, has returned to work, but is confined to light administrative duties in the office.

Mokhtar said he was very touched by the gesture from his boss, and the assistance provided by Socso.

“It is very consoling to have such caring people concerned with the welfare of a fellow subordinate.

“I will strive to carry on with life, which must go on. There are others with worse problems,” he said.

Mokhtar advised people to watch their food and beverage intake.

He said he hopes Socso will consider assisting him in installing twin wheels at the rear of his motorcycle to enable him to ride as a disabled person.
