Bill on employees' insurance scheme to be tabled this year

KUALA LUMPUR: About four million workers stand to benefit from a proposed employees' insurance scheme to protect their welfare in the event of retrenchment, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.

Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abdul Muttalib said the scheme was being finalised to obtain approval from the government.

"The Bill on the scheme is expected to be tabled in the Parliament this year.

"When it is passed, it will be implemented next year," he said in question and answer session.

He was responding to a question from Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR-Kuala Langat) who wanted to know what steps had been taken by the government to expedite the implementation of the scheme.

Ismail said the scheme would provide financial aid in the period when workers were laid off before getting a new job.

"Those who quit their job to look for other employment will also benefit from the financial aid under the scheme," he said.
