Three teens detained for running down education officer

BESUT: Police have detained three teenagers including a high school dropout, who tried to run over a 56-year-old education officer on March 7, with their red Honda Jazz car near Jalan Amer, Kampung Raja here.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the victim attached with the Besut District Education Office sustained injuries on his left leg and waist as well as bruises on his body and neck.

Zamri said in the police report, the victim claimed that he was knocked down a day after telling the boys off. He had asked the boys to stop driving near the sports ground because their antics could hurt someone participating in the district sports event.

“In the incident on March 6, the victim tried to stop the boys who were driving dangerously near SMK Nasiruddin Shah, a location where a sports event involving schools in Besut was being held,” he said.

“They made obscene gestures at the victim who was trying to approach the car but sped off before the victim was able to get close to car,” he said.

Zamri said the victim then spotted the boys near Jalan Amer on the following day and approached them at around 6pm.

“The victim claimed that he walked to the car with the intention to advise the boys not to drive dangerously near the school but before he reached the car, the driver rammed into the victim.”

Following the report made at the Kampung Raja police station, the teenagers have been picked up from their homes in Taman Pelagat Seberang Jerteh, Rumah Murah Nyior Tujuh and Kampung Lahar, Gong Kepas.

Police also seized the red Honda Jazz.

“The boys are being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder,” he said today.

If convicted, they could face a jail sentence of up to 20 years and a fine.

Zamri said both Form Three students of a school in the district and the 16-year-old high school dropout tested negative for drugs.
