Heroes needed to help raise funds for special needs school

KOTA KINABALU: The second Amazing Heroes Run in April this year is back and with a great cause of raising funds for the Seri Mengasih Centre, a special developmental centre for children with disabilities.

Funds are needed to help the school move its operations into a new building in One Sulaman here, next year. The centre has been operating at Tanjung Aru since 1983.

“We are bringing back the event which received good response first time it was held, and we hoped the public would participate in the event this year,” said the centre’s executive director Monica Chua.

“Last year we surpassed the target by collecting RM120,000 and we hope to see the figure increased this year.

“We still need funding for operational costs as well as renovation and interior design costs for the new place,” said Chua during a press conference, where Lonpac Insurance Bhd also presented the centre with a mock cheque of RM20,000 as the event’s main sponsor.

The run is expected to attract 2,000 participants and will be open to the public. It will be flagged off from Maktab Nasional Kota Kinabalu and it is divided into two categories, a 3km course and another 10km circuit.

The 3km run is designed for families, including those with young children, while the 10km run is meant for serious contenders.

Seri Megasih Centre has over 100 students with various disabilities currently enrolled in the centre’s programmes. There are 43 staff stationed here, including therapists.

In the past, Chua said that trainees from the centre have managed to secure jobs at hotels, fast food outlets and supermarkets nearby.
