Boy, 6, drowns in abandoned pond in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: A six-year-old boy was found drowned inside an abandoned pond near a homestay in Pantai Chenang today.

Aiman Zikri Basri's lifeless body was found near the water's edge by firemen about 8pm.

Aiman is believed to have gone alone to play near the pond.

His father only realised Aiman had gone missing when the boy failed to return to their house in Kampung Lubuk Buaya, Mukim Kedawang at 7.30pm.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Nur Hafizah Muhammad Lukman said the department received a distress call about a possible drowning case at the location at 7.39pm.

She said two officers and five personnel conducted a search and rescue mission in the area before they found the boy's dead in the pond.

"Firemen found Aiman's body floating near the water's edge at about 8pm while conducting a surface search.

"The pond was about six metres deep," she said in a statement.

Aiman was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was handed to the police for further action.
