Sabah calms social media-fuelled fears over 'Biskut Gery' food colouring

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s Health Department today assured consumers that the food colouring used in the popular ‘Biskut Gery’ is safe for consumption.

The department is responding to a viral post on social media claiming the presence of tartrazine in the biscuits, and highlighting its side effects.

"Tartrazine is a synthetic dye that can be used in biscuits as stated under the Food Regulations Act 1985.

"The Health Ministry will constantly monitor issues related to food safety to ensure the wellbeing of the people," Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said in a statement.

She added that the public can lodge a report with the Ministry if they have any doubt about the safety of any food.
