Wonder walls

There are many ways to beautify exterior walls that will make houses even more eye-catching, writes Putri Zanina

SPICE up your exterior walls. While it’s nice to have them painted in plain colours and leaving them bare and clean, why not try some wall decoration ideas?

Add window boxes, shutters, carved panels, creative artwork and other decorative pieces and see how your walls will change from plain to outstanding. Your exterior walls will be anything but typical!

1. CLASSIC BEAUTY

Get inspired by the 19th century houses of old Malaya. Wooden louvre windows and panels were the style then. Not only do they make your outer walls look quaint but louvre windows also allow a good flow of air which can be varied by changing the pitch of the louvres.

Install intricately-carved wooden panels to shade the windows. Placed against a stark white brick wall, you’ll have a modern take on a golden oldie.

2. INDENTED WALLS

Create niches or shallow recesses on any part of your exterior walls to display eye-catching ornaments like vases, bowls and figurines. Place flowering plants for colour contrast.

Making wall indentations is one of the ways to accessorise plain walls with your favourite things. Add a good touch of artistry and create an element of interest by adding perhaps a sculpture that will spark conversations.

3. WALL ART

Invent your own unique piece of artwork and attach it to your exterior wall. Creating artwork need not be expensive. Use readily available materials. This picture shows a piece of wall art created from enamel plates, cups, forks and spoons, all enhanced using colour sprays. The paint-streaked walls in muted colours make the perfect contrast to the colourful art piece.

4. WALL FRAMES

Jazz up a plain wall with wooden or metal frames that you can design in any which way you like. The frames bring stylish solutions to any space, including outer walls. You can even hang little ornaments or small potted plants on the frame. Thicker frames allow you to display your favourite things on your wall.

5. VERTICAL GARDEN

A definite charmer for any wall, the vertical garden has become increasingly popular. Working on a vertical garden can be a fulfilling activity as it’s like creating a living work of art to beautify your walls.

It’s easy to find pre-assembled vertical garden systems which give the right amount of nutrients and water to your plants. You may even build your own vertical garden structure for a unique touch. Get tutorials on the web or pick up some tips from gardening and landscape outfits.
