Nazri insists debate will go on, permit or no permit

KUALA LUMPUR: Member of Parliament for Padang Rengas, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, will still turn up for a debate with former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, even though the event has been denied a permit from the police.

Mohamed Nazri, who is also Minister of Tourism and Culture, gave his assurance that the debate will take place peacefully, on Saturday as scheduled, at the Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM), Kuala Kangsar.

"I'll make sure the discourse runs smoothly," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Perak acting police Datuk Hasnan Hassan said in a statement today that the application for a permit to hold the debate was rejected because the organisers submitted it at the last minute.

The venue for the debate is also a protected place, and police received eight reports lodged by the public and residents in the area who were worried about their own safety, as well as of their families, he said. -- Bernama
