GEORGE TOWN: A woman who was sentenced to six months’ jail for slapping a teacher was granted a stay of execution pending her appeal at the High Court here.
Judicial Commissioner Azmi Ariffin, in granting the stay of execution, also allowed Tan Seow Yen bail at RM5,000, with one surety.
On Feb 16, 2015, Tan claimed trial to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to a 39-year-old teacher by slapping her on the face, after accusing her of pinching her daughter.
She is alleged to have committed the offence on Feb 2, 2015, and was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
During the trial proper, five prosecution witnesses testified, while two defence witnesses spoke.
The Jawi Magistrate's Court had sentenced the woman to six months in prison and fined her RM2,000, or another two months in jail, after finding her guilty.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Azrul Abdul Rahman appeared for the prosecution, while Tan was represented by Mohd Ismail Mohamed.
