Self-Employed Act for cab drivers to be tabled in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Self-Employed Act, which aims to administer Social Security Organisation (Socso) schemes for taxi drivers nationwide, will be tabled in the current Parliament session.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem said the act could protect the well-being of taxi drivers.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers approved the draft of the new bill yesterday,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

If the bill is passed, taxi drivers will enjoy the same benefits as other workers under the Contract of Service scheme.

It was reported that the act is expected to come into effect this May if passed in Parliament.

Meanwhile, Socso issued 3,010 compounds to employers who violated the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 last year.

Riot (BN-Serian) said legal action will be taken against 1,311 employers.

“In 2015, 3,641 employers had been issued compounds, and legal action was taken against 1,202 employers,” he said in reply to Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad’s (BN-Mersing) questions.

Riot added that Socso’s fund has increased to RM24.67 billion compared to RM23.86 billion in 2015.
