Man who tried to bribe Johor Sultan surrenders

PUTRAJAYA: The bald Chinese man wanted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for attempting to bribe the Sultan of Johor, has surrendered.

He is wanted for allegedly offering the Johor Sultan RM2 million in exchange for proposing candidates for the ‘Tan Sri’ titles.

It is believed that he went to the MACC headquarters alone around lunch time, a few hours after MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner Datuk Azam Baki issued a warning that he had until midnight to turn himself in.

His lawyers arrived later in the evening.

“The man has surrendered himself and investigations are on-going.

“To remand him or not, will be decided tomorrow,” Azam said.

Azam added that Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has not given an official recorded statement but merely passed on the information to MACC.

“We need to get this guy first and see what this is all about,” Azam told reporters after MACC’s Excellence Award ceremony.

If found guilty, the man will be charged under MACC Act 2009.

Last week, the Johor ruler revealed that an individual had offered him RM2 million to propose to the Chief Secretary to the Government, names of candidates for the ‘Tan Sri’ title, which would be bestowed by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
