KUCHING: Two Sarawak junior golfers, Anson Yeo, 9, and Lim Beng Kiat, 15, will compete in the Teen World Championships 2015 to be held in Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina, USA from July 23 to 25.

They are expected to tee off against some 500 young golfers worldwide in this prestigious championships organised by US Kids Golf.

Anson, from Kuching, created golf history for being the youngest from the state to compete in the world-class junior championships of the Malaysian leg of the Kids Golf World Championships 2014.

Lim, from Miri city, on the other hand, won the 13-14 year category of the same tournament held at Le Grendeur Golf Resort, Johor Baru.

Sarawak Golf Association(SGA) president Hoan Kee Hock said both young golfers deserved the support and recognition of the local golf fraternity for their role in showcasing young golf talents from the state.

“We are very proud of their achievements. They have shown us the true Sarawak spirit by highlighting the standard of golf that we have here to the international stage,” he said.

Both Anson and Lim today received sponsorships from the state through Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom to enable them to compete in the USA.

At the presentation held at his office, Mawan handed out government grants totalling RM130,000 to four other associations and the two golfers.

For the record, Anson started playing golf at the age of six and Lim, at the age of seven.

Both had the experience of competing against their foreign peers during the annual Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup Junior Championships in Kuching.--BERNAMA
