Cop question mini tractor driver over fatal river mishap near Besut

BESUT: Police have recorded a statement from the driver of a mini tractor over a mishap at Sungai Besut near Kampung Cegar Malok, yesterday which led to the death of two children.

In the 5.30pm incident, two children, aged seven and 10 drowned while two others, including the 46-year-old driver were injured.

District police chief Superintendant Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the man, a rubber tapper from Kampung Panchor, here, suffered injuries on his right leg following the crash.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road and Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing death.

The victims were identified as Nor Aimy Dania Azman, seven, and Rabiatul Adawiyah Sayuti, 10, both from Kampung Cegar Malok and pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung La, Hulu Besut.

Zamri said the driver and Nor Aimy’s sister were rescued by villagers who saw the crash.

He said the three students had hitched a ride on the tractor near the river but while trying to climb a bund by the side of the river, the tractor suddenly lost control and plunged into the river.

“All three students who were seated behind the driver were thrown into the river by the impact," he added.

Nor Aimy died at the scene while Rabiatul passed away while on the way to the Besut Hospital for treatment.
