MyWatch's Sanjeevan acquitted of extortion charge

KAJANG: Malaysia Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan has been acquitted of an extortion charge by the magistrate's court today.

Magistrate Norafidah Idris made the order after counsel S. Preakas told the court the there was no reason for the prosecution to hold on to the charge as the complainant had withdrawn his complaint.

Preakas said his client should be given a discharge and acquitted.

Earlier, the prosecution had applied for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal as the complainant had withdrawn his complaint against Sanjeevan.

Sanjeevan was charged with extorting RM20,000 from businessman Ong Lam Chin by putting fear into him, at Restoren Rest in Taman TTDI Grove Kajang, near here at 8pm on June 23, 2016.

He was charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine or whipping.
