Korean man drowns snorkelling at Mamutik Island

KOTA KINABALU: A Korean man on holiday with his family here drowned while snorkelling at Mamutik Island late this afternoon.

The remains of Shim Jae Sun, 48, was found near the island by scuba divers who immediately alerted the authorities.

Acting district police chief Superintendent George Abd Rakman said the victim’s body was found floating along the coral reef behind the island around 3pm.

The body was taken to the district marine jetty before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHI) for a post-mortem.

George said initial police investigation revealed no foul play in the incident but a thorough investigation will still be carried out by the forensics team.

Police investigation also found the victim left the Tanjung Aru Marina jetty with his family at around 1pm for snorkelling at Mamutik Island.

The case has been classified as sudden dead.
