Man gets 6 months' jail, fined 10k, for trying to bribe Seremban cop

SEREMBAN: A jobless man was fined RM10,000 by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to offering a RM101 bribe to a policeman last year.

Judge Fathiyah Idris also sentenced Mohamad Daud Abdullah, 53, to six months' imprisonment, beginning today.

In addition, Daud was ordered to serve an extra six-month jail term should he fail to raise the money to settle the fine.

Earlier, Daud pleaded guilty to the charge of offering a RM101 bribe to Constable Peh Chee Chong, who is attached with the Seremban district police volunteer office, as an inducement not to take action against him for behaving indecently in public with a woman.

He had committed the offence at Jalan S2G2 Garden Avenue here, at 11.20pm on June 9, last year.

Daud was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is read together with Section 28 (1)(a), which carries a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment, and a fine five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The case was prosecuted by MACC deputy public prosecutor Karmila Mokhtar, while the accused was not represented.
