Grocery store owner jailed a day, fined for bribing Immigration officer

PETRA JAYA: A grocery shop operator was jailed a day and fined RM10,000, in default two months’ jail, by the Kuching Special Court for Corruption today for bribing an enforcement officer last year.

Ngu Ho Woon, 59, had pleaded guilty to giving RM2,000 to Immigration officer Mohd Aliff Zarquan Mohd Zaki at his shop in 7th Mile, Penrissen Road, here, at 6.15pm on Nov 15, 2016.

According to the facts of the case, the bribe was an inducement for Aliff to not take any action against Ngu’s Indonesian workers, who failed to produce valid work permits during an operation conducted by the state Immigration Department.

He was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which carries a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine up to five times the amount of bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

MACC prosecuting officer Katherine Nais prosecuted while Ngu was not represented. He paid the fine.

The case was heard before judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong.
