Police clean-up Pulau Perhentian, nab 11 drug addicts

BESUT: Police have arrested 16 men including 11 drug addicts in a joint operation codenamed Ops Tapis at Pulau Perhentian yesterday morning.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the suspects aged between 20 and 51, were picked up at Pasir Panjang and around Pulau Perhentian in the nine-hour operation which ended at 9am.

“A total of 117 enforcement officers from several agencies were involved in the operations, including 33 policemen of which 13 were from the Kuala Terengganu narcotics division,” he said today.

Other agencies involved were the Besut Municipal Council, Besut Religious Office, marine police, Immigration Department and Malaysian Marine Park Department.

The raiding team departed in eight boats from Pangkalan Polis Marin, Tok Bali, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan.

“Of the 11 drug addicts, two are being investigated under the Section 15(1), and Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, while the rest are being detained under Section :pensive:1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for drug abuse,” he said, adding that his team also arrested a suspect with an outstanding warrant of arrest.

All of the detainees were taken to the Kampung Raja police station for further investigation.
