Melaka protection racket case: 'Middleman' released on bail

PUTRAJAYA: A van driver who was remanded as part of a probe into a protection racket allegedly run by Melaka policemen, was released on bail today.

The man was released on RM100,000 Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) bail with one surety.

The release order was issued by Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman.

Earlier, the 32-year-old, clad in a grey T-shirt and brown pants, arrived at court at 9am.

He is believed to have served as a middleman for several policemen by collecting protection money from illegal gambling dens and massage parlours at several locations in Melaka. It is learnt that his bank account had been used to store the money.

On May 19, he was remanded for six days to facilitate investigation. His remand order was later extended for six more days.

He was the 11th person to be detained to facilitate investigation into the case.

The MACC arrested 13 people, including three district police chiefs and four policemen, who have since been released on bail.
