Johor man stores RM50k withdrawn from bank under car seat, goes for lunch; Thieves smash window, ride off with money

JOHOR BARU: A 45-year-old company director was robbed of RM50,000 after thieves smashed one of his car’s windows and made off with the cash.

The car had been parked at Jalan Mutiara Emas in Taman Mount Austin here at 2.15pm.

The victim had earlier withdrawn the money from a bank to pay the salary of staff at his company.

"The victim had placed the money in a plastic bag and hid it under the driver's seat before going for a meal at a nearby food stall.

"About two minutes later, someone informed him that the window of his car had been smashed," Johor Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said in a statement.

Police are looking for two men on a motorcycle who were spotted by eye-witnesses near the scene. The licence plate number of the vehicle was not ascertained, however.

On a separate matter, police say they have increased their presence state-wide to monitor unusual activities in light of recent terror attacks in the United Kingdom and Jakarta.

The “Men in Black” operation has conducted checks at shopping malls in Johor Baru, Iskandar Puteri, the Kukup Immigration Jetty, the Senai International Airport, the Bandar Maharani ferry terminal and the bus station in Mersing, among others, since yesterday.

A total of 217 people, including 67 women, have been checked by the enforcement team so far.

Bomb blasts at a Jakarta bus station left three policemen dead and 12 others wounded on Wednesday, while a suicide bombing last Monday at a packed Ariana Grande concert in Manchester killed 22 people and injured 59 others.
