Police question 5 editors, 1 photographer from The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded the statements of five editors and a photographer from The Star over its controversial May 27 front page.

The five editors and photographer arrived at the police headquarters in Bukit Aman at about noon today and they were questioned separately for more than two hours.

Lawyer Amer Hamzah Arshad, who represented the six people, said they have been very cooperative with the police.

“They have answered all the questions asked and they told the police everything they know (about the front page).

“We believe that the police will be fair and professional in conducting their investigation,” he said when contacted.

Amer said he was informed that the six are being investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act and Section 298A Section 298 A of the Penal Code.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh confirmed that police have recorded statements from the six.

The Home Ministry has given the newspaper seven days to respond to a show cause letter over its front page on Saturday, which depicted a picture of Muslims performing terawih prayer sandwiched between the headline “Malaysian terrorist leader” and a spa advertisement.

Four editors were summoned to the Home Ministry on May 29 to provide an explanation over the matter and yesterday, two of its two top editors were suspended pending investigations and inquiry into matter.

The Star had also issued an apology following wide criticism over its front page.

The issue had triggered criticisms from Netizens, social organisations and even political parties that described the cover as a “misleading visual representation” apart from being insensitive to Muslims.
