Police remand 5 for another 5 days in Alor Star's mall molest incident

ALOR STAR: Police have obtained a five-day remand extension against five suspects arrested for investigation into the death of a man who was beaten up by a mob over an alleged molest incident at a mall here on Sunday.

One of the five suspects is the alleged molest victim, in her 20s.

Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said Alor Star Magistrate Court had allowed the remand to be extended until next Wednesday for further investigation.

Mohd Rozi said police are still looking for five other men to assist in the probe.

On Tuesday, the suspect succumbed to his injuries after slipping into coma while being treated for severe head injuries at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, more than 40 hours after he was attacked by a mob at the mall for allegedly molesting a salesgirl.

The woman claimed that the man had followed her into the restroom and locked the door before molesting her.

She had claimed that the man had punched her when she tried to push him away.

She further claimed that the man panicked and tried to run when she shouted for help but was caught by members of the public who had beaten him up before alerting the police.

A video of the man being attacked by a mob after his arrest has gone viral on social media.

Following his death, police had reclassified the case from Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
