638 accidents recorded in three days in KL; 60 pct involve motorcycles

KUALA LUMPUR: City police have recorded a total of 638 accidents within three days of Op Selamat 11/2017.

From the total, 633 of the accidents involved only vehicle damages, one fatality and four injuries.

City deputy police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said from the total number of the accidents, 60 per cent involved motorcyclists.

The number was recorded between the first day of the operation (Sunday) and yesterday.

“If we look at previous accident rates, most of the accidents in the city centre are due to speeding, fender-benders, driving under the influence, using mobile phones, beating red lights and heavy vehicles not following travel time bans,” said Mazlan.

Mazlan said during the operation, police would be focusing on 10 hotspots in the city centre.

The 10 spots are Jalan Kepong, Jalan Cheras, Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Klang Lama, Jalan Duta and Jalan Sg Besi.

He said police will be deploying its patrol cars and motorcycles in the operation to curb break-ins in the city centre.

“A total of 129 cars and 176 motorcycles are being deployed on a rotation basis.

“As of now, 156 people have notified the police that they are going back to their hometown and more are expected to register soon,” he said.

Mazlan was speaking to reporters after launching the state-level Op Selamat 11/2017 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The operation will continue until July 2.
