T'ganu man slapped with RM10,000 fine for trying to bribe corporal

KUALA TERENGGANU: A self-employed man paid a heavy price for attempting to bribe a policeman when he was sentenced to a day’s jail and a RM10,000 fine here today.

Sessions court president judge Mohammad Haldar Abdul Aziz sentenced Amir Khairi Hirman Mansor, 22, after the accused pleaded guilty to offering a RM1,000 bribe to Corporal Carsten Wilson.

Mohammad Haldar also ordered Amir to serve six months’ jail should he fail to pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, Amir’s urine sample had tested positive for methamphetamine, after which he offered the money as an inducement to be spared arrest at the Manir police station at 2.55pm on Feb 10 last year.

He was charged under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for a maximum 20 years’ jail and five times the amount bribed, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Amer Abu Bakar Abdullah prosecuted while Amir was unrepresented.
