MACC nabs Johor DoE senior officer for allegedly accepting RM4,000 bribe

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today nabbed a 40-year old Johor Department of Environment (DoE) senior officer for allegedly accepting bribe over the approval of an Environmental Management Plan.

The suspect, holding the post of Senior Environment Control Officer C44, is also the Johor Baru's DoE Development Division chief and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Enforcement Unit chief.

A statement from the MACC said the officer was arrested today following an investigation into his case where he was alleged to have accepted a RM4,000, which was transferred into his personal account on Dec 1 last year.

It was alleged that the suspect had received the bribe as an inducement for him in approving an Environmental Management Plan report prepared by a company.

The company is involved in preparing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and Environmental Monitoring Report (EMR) and other auditing work related to environmental matters.

Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias said the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) report was meant for a developer who has a project in Pulai.

"The suspect is in custody and the MACC is expected to apply for a remand order from the Johor Baru magistrate's court tomorrow to detain him for investigation under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009," he said.

A person convicted under this offence could be jailed up to 20 years and fined up to RM10,000 or five times the amount of graft, whichever is higher.
