MACC nabs 7, including DBKL officer, for alleged graft involving cleaning contracts

SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had yesterday arrested a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) housing manager and seven contractors over alleged graft and abuse of power involving cleaning contracts.

All the suspects, including three women, aged between 37 and 61, were arrested by the Selangor MACC at several locations in an operation from 3pm to 6pm.

Sources said that the City Hall officer was believed to have solicited and accepted monthly bribes from the contractors from 2014 to this year.

"The act was an inducement to reduce the slashing of claims of the cleaning work contracts that are submitted by the contractors. It involved contractors in 26 cleaning zones under the City Hall," said the source.

Meanwhile, Selangor MACC director Datuk Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah confirmed the arrests, adding that the seven were detained after receiving information on the matter.

"We have carried out investigations and believe that there are elements of graft in this case. We are taking further action through legal means," he said.

He also confirmed the five-day remand order of six suspects beginning today to assist in investigations, while a female contractor was released on bail after her statement was recorded yesterday.
