Sibu man arrested in connection with USJ Lance Corporal's murder

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Lance Corporal at the Pinggiran USJ Police station yesterday.

The man, who hails from Sibu, Sarawak, had his statement recorded before he was arrested at about 1am, reportedly at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor said they will be applying for a remand order against the man this morning.

"(The arrest) is standard operating procedure (to facilitate the murder) investigation.

"We hope there will be no speculation (among the public at this point), as it will jeopardise the probe," he said in a statement.

Yesterday, a social media post which went viral claimed that a man was arrested at about 7.40pm as he was about to board a plane to Sibu. Police denied the claim.

In the incident on Thursday, Valentino Mesa, 29, was found dead at the police station’s information counter at about 3.30am.

He had sustained a gunshot wound to his back and slash wounds to his head.

Investigators believe Valentino may have been shot with his own service firearm, which is now missing.

Valentino’s body was discovered by his colleagues when they returned from a routine patrol and noticed that the station was in darkness. One of them went to the front desk counter and saw him lying face down on the floor.
