Burglars make off with six laptops in early morning break-in

MELAKA: A group of thieves made off with six laptops worth RM8,000 after breaking into the office of an insurance company in Melaka Raya here today.

Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Afzanizar Ahmad said the incident occurred at about 5.08am today.

He said the suspects managed to pry open the office’s grilled door and switched off the alarm system.

“The suspects entered the building through the front staircase and made their way up to the second floor (the marketing department).

“They then smashed the glass door of the second floor before stealing the laptops.

“The suspects then walked out of the building carrying bag packs using the same route,” he told reporters here today.

Afzanizar added that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed that the office’s alarm system rang but was subsequently turned off by the suspects.

“Only the second floor of the office, which uses the open-office concept, was broken into and there were no traces of the office being ransacked.

“There were also no witnesses when the burglary happened, but our forensics teams have been able to detect several fingerprints at the scene,” he said.

It was learnt that the office is a three-storey building. Its first floor is the operations department, the second floor is the marketing department and the third floor is the insurance department.

A report was lodged at the Banda Hilir police station at 6.49am today.

The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for breaking into a premises and theft.
