Shattered Rohingya man begs court to 'let me just burn myself'

KUALA LUMPUR: "There is no use of me living in this world anymore. Let me just burn myself," wailed a Rohingya man.

His heart wrenching lament came as he was sentenced at the Magistrates court here for attempted suicide by pouring petrol and seeking set fire to himself.

Nineteen-year-old Ali Johar Jamal Hussin who wore a black and grey striped T-shirt could not contain his feelings as he pleaded for leniency after being sentenced to three months jail by the magistrate's court for the offence.

Ali Johar said he was forced to resort to the act as he was devastated after his family members were killed by bombs in Myanmar.

"It is only me now in this world, I am devastated. My family, they were killed, they were bombed by the (Myanmar) soldiers. I am left in this world on my own," he said crying out load at his predicament.

Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abdul Wahid handed down the sentence after the accused admitted to have tried to burn himself to death by pouring petrol on himself near the Ampang Park LRT station in Jalan Ampang here at 11.30am on Aug 30.

Deputy public prosecutor Noorellyna Hanim Abd Halim urged for a deterrent sentence saying that the accused could have asked for help from the non-governmental Organisation (NGO) who are actively aiding the ethnic group.

"The accused should know how to control his emotions and should think before making any rash decision," she said.

According to the facts of the case, on the day of the incident, police saw a group of Rohingya men gathering in a protest while holding up signs that say 'Stop Killing Rohingya from Arakan'.

Police then found one of the protestors pouring petrol on his body to burn himself while yelling "there is no use of me living anymore.. the Myanmar soldiers had burnt down my village".

The person was then arrested.
