KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be sending a request to the Attorney-General's Chambers over its intentionto initiate civil suit against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, today.
Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad said the commission's top management has decided on the action, however it would have to wait for the AGC's approval.
"I would like to make some correction.. we have not submitted our request, but we will send it by today.
"As a government agency we need to refer to the AGC before we take any civil action.. our top management however has collectively agreed on taking the action but we wait for the AGC's approval," he said during a press conference after attending a passing out parade for new MACC recruits, held at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here, today.
He however declines to comment on Guan Eng's refusal to apologise.
Dzulkifli recently gave Guan Eng 48 hours to apologise over a statement, calling the arrest of
Penang senior executive councillor Phee Boon Poh as "illegal".
He regarded Guan Eng’s statement on Phee’s arrest as defamatory and meant to smear the good name of the commission.
Phee was detained for investigations related to an illegal carbon filter factory in Bukit Mertajam.
Meanwhile on a separate case, Dzulkifli said the commission has yet to wrap up its investigation into corruption cases involving police officers in Melaka.
He said the commission was still looking for witnesses to assist in the investigations.
He added that some of the key witnesses were believed to have fled the country.
"The investigation is still ongoing and we are still waiting to record statements from all the witnesses.
"As soon as we record their statements we will submit the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor," he said.
A total of 13 individuals including nine police personnel in Melaka were detained for allegedly protecting illegal gambling outlets and massage parlours in the state.
Among those arrested were Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah and Jasin district police chief Deputy Superintendent Sakri Yusof Zahari.
