Keramat tahfiz tragedy: Police scour lake for evidence

KUALA LUMPUR: A team of police divers today spent some three hours scouring the Datuk Keramat lake, located behind the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz religious school.

They were combing the lake for evidence used in the arson a few weeks ago.

According to a police source, they were searching for objects used by the suspects to break-in into the school such as a screwdriver.

The suspects were believed to have thrown in the objects into the lake after they set the dormitory on the third floor of the school on fire.

Four divers were seen diving into the lake at 10.30am.

Divers began their began scouring from the lake bank, near the fence where the suspects climbed to get into the school compound, and continued their search up to 10 metre towards the middle of the lake.

The operation ended at about 1.40pm.

It is learnt that the operation proved futile.

The source said the operation was hampered by the muddy water.

About 5am on Sept 14, a fire broke out on the third floor of the school, killing 21 students and two hostel wardens.

Seven individuals, aged between 11 and 18, were arrested to facilitate investigations into the case, which was believed to have been triggered by revenge.

Police had obtained a remand extension on the suspects until Friday.
