More may have their statements recorded over death of two navy men

PUTRAJAYA: Police did not discount the possibility of more people being called to have their statements recorded in connection with the death of two navy men.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Fuzi Harun said this was to assist in the probe into their death while in the detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan, in Perak on Saturday.

"We have recorded statements from more than seven people. There will probably be more in the coming days.

"This, however, will depend on the progress of the investigation," he said after attending the Premier Gathering of the Civil Service (MAPPA) at Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here.

On how long it would take for the investigation to be completed, he said it was too soon to tell as the forensic reports, among others, were still pending.

Yesterday, Fuzi was reported as saying that the police had taken over the investigations into the custodial deaths of Mohd Baihaqi Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatulman Mohd Sukri, 26.

This was after the cases which were reported as sudden death were found to have negligence and criminal elements.

The cases were reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, he added.

Police arrested three Navy men aged between 29 and 44, about 9.30pm on Saturday to facilitate investigations.

Two more Navy officers were arrested yesterday after two other Navy men lodged a police report over alleged physical assault by their colleagues at the same detention unit in Sungai Wangi, Sitiawan.

The alleged victims, both aged 30, who had visible injuries on the abdomen, were currently receiving treatment at the Lumut Military Hospital.

Police were also reported to have recorded statements from eight detainees and 11 guards on duty at the scene.
