Police not ruling out more arrests in probe of national diver's alleged rape

KOTA KINABALU: Police investigating the alleged rape of a national diving athlete will make further arrests in the case if there is a need to do so, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said on Saturday.

He said additional arrests, if necessary, would be made in order to complete the investigation papers.

“So far, we have arrested (one) man. I think we can consider that we have arrested the main suspect, but it depends on the development of our probe.

“We have also seized closed-circuit television (footage), and we have referred (to) chemists and pathologists to conclude our investigation process (on the case),” he said.

Fuzi was speaking to reporters at the Sabah state honours and awards investiture ceremony, held in conjunction with the 64th birthday celebration of Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at the Istana Negeri here.

He was present to receive his Seri Panglima Darjah Kinabalu (SPDK), which carries the “Datuk Seri” title.

To a question on whether there are other victims, Fuzi replied that there is only one, and stressed that the police will conduct the investigation thoroughly.

“Thus far, we have recorded statements from 18 people. We hope to complete this (investigation) paper and submit it to the Attorney-General’s Chambers as soon as possible,” he said.

On Monday, police arrested a 35-year-old aquatics coach, originally from China, following a report lodged by a national diver on Sept 30.

The coach is alleged to have raped the underage diver on Sept 26 at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.

The accused has been working in the country for over five years. He is said to be married to a Malaysian and has permanent resident status.

Earlier on Saturday, Kuala Lumpur police Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said the coach will be further remanded until Oct 11.
