Two men nabbed for possessing 40 sacks of ketum leaves in Besut

BESUT: Police on Sunday nabbed two men for possessing 40 sacks of ketum leaves at a house in Kampung Tok Saboh in Kuala Besut here.

However, the suspects, aged 48 and 34, from Kampung Seneng Jelawat and Kampung Kok Lanas in Kelantan, tested negative for drugs.

It was learnt that police raided the house at about 1am on Sunday.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said police discovered a fiber container filled with 40 packets of ketum juice (mitragynine) in the kitchen.

“We also seized a scale from them during the raid,” he said.

Zamri said both suspects, who had a previous drug-related offence, will be investigated under Section 30(3) of the Poison Act 1952.

He said the ketum juice weighed more than 200kg and was worth about RM2, 300.

He said initial investigations revealed that both suspects bought ketum leaves from a supplier in Kuala Nerang, Kedah.

“They bought the leaves for RM10 per kilogramme and sold (the juice) for RM35 per kilogramme.”

He said both suspects were involved in selling the item to addicts in Kuala Besut since January this year.
