Navy torture: Sailors to face murder charges tomorrow

IPOH: Several of the men arrested following the deaths of two Royal Malaysian Navy personnel at the Sungai Wangi detention unit in Sitiawan, are expected to be charged at the Seri Manjung court tomorrow.

Perak Criminal Investigations Department chief Datuk Gan Tian Kee said the men would be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

In the Sept 29 incident, Nik Muhammad Baihaqy Nik Mat, 28, and Muhammad Lailatuliman Mohd Sukri, 26, had complained of exhaustion while undergoing training at the detention unit.

They were given immediate treatment after vomiting and suffering shortness of breath, but were later declared dead by the medical personnel there.

Post-mortem reports revealed that they succumbed to lung bleeding, believed to be due to torture.

Two other navy men who were undergoing training at the unit then lodged police reports alleging assault by naval military policemen.

The case prompted RMN to set up its inquiry board to scrutinise the standand operating procedure to establish if there was any breach during the training.

It was revealed that the victims were deemed healthy during screening process, which is part of the SOP, before being brought to the detention unit.
