Police nab teen football fan for insulting Perak Sultan on social media

IPOH: Perak police have detained a teenager who made a statement on social media recently which insulted the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.

The 19-year-old is a Form Six student of Sekolah Menengah Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah 1, Pagoh, Muar, Johor, who was due to sit for his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Menengah (STPM) examination in early November.

“The suspect was remanded for three days, in the presence of a magistrate, to help in the investigation,” Perak Police Chief Datuk Hasnan Hassan said in a statement.

He said that the arrest was made after police received six reports on Saturday, Oct 14, about the social media post, which had gone viral.

Early investigation found that the insulting words were the result of an online brawl between supporters of two football teams – Perak Power and My Football Liga – which led to the suspect besmirching the name of the Sultan.

Hasnan said police view the matter seriously and have opened an investigation paper under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. -- Bernama
