Shafie out of hospital, on the way to court for remand process

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has left the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 for his remand process at the magistrate’s court.

Clad in a white T-shirt, Shafie managed a smile as he greeted well-wishers at the hospital lobby before boarding an ambulance to head to the court.

The Parti Warisan Sabah president, who was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) last night, had been warded at the hospital at midnight for high blood pressure.

He was detained to facilitate the commission’s probe into mishandling of federal funded projects in Sabah.

The allocation was meant for rural development projects in the state between 2009 and 2015, during when Shafie was the Rural and Regional Development Minister.

The probe revolves around 70 projects pertaining roads as well as water and electricity supply in the Sabah interior.

Shafie was the 11th individual detained by graftbusters over the issue.

Earlier, two of his brothers, Hamid and Mohd Yusof, had also been detained over the probe.

Others who were remanded include Hamid's son-in-law Manzur Hussein Alam Khan; Warisan vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony; Warisan Youth chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman; Tenom Umno Youth chief Jamawi Jaafar; Tawau Umno Youth chief Ariffin Kassim; and a local businessman Yu Sin Kong.

Yusof is still under remand until Saturday while others have been released on MACC bail.
