Disabled man, girlfriend to hang for drug-trafficking

ALOR STAR: A disabled man and his girlfriend were today sentenced to death by hanging for trafficking 28.67 grams of drugs in Kulim, two years ago.

The couple lso faced 10 years jail for possessing 39.41 grams of methamphetamine, with the man also sentenced to 10 strokes of the rotan.

High Court judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah, in delivering the verdict, said the court found the accused had failed to prove reasonable doubt over their cases.

In the dock were used car salesman Muhamad Samri Hashim, 40, and Salina Dtiauddin, 32.

Both were guilty of trafficking 28.67grams of dangerous drugs - comprising of 23.32 grams of heroin and 3.55 grams of monoacethymorphines - under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In the second charge, the duo were found guilty of possessing 39.41grams of methamphetamine under Section 12(2) of the same Act and faced penalties under Section 39A(2) of the same Act.

Both offences were committed inside a car about 1am on March 12, 2015 at Jalan Bukit Awi, Kulim.

Salina, a single-mother of three, was seen wiping away tears when the judge delivered the verdict.

Samri, who lost his right leg in an accident in 1998, merely looked down.

Lawyer Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid, in mitigation, said the offence was the Salina’s first. She had previously worked as welfare volunteer.

The case was handled by deputy public prosecutor Norshuhada Mohd Yatim.
