S'gor woman pays RM7.9m to lucky number forecaster she met on Facebook; number never materialised

SHAH ALAM: A wealthy widow lost RM7.9 million after she was cheated by a man claiming to work for a “lucky number forecasting” company in Hong Kong.

The woman only realised that she had been deceived when the man failed to give her the promised number, despite her having deposited the money through 22 transactions between July and September.

Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli said the 49-year-old woman had used her husband's death insurance and their property to pay the bogus lucky number forecaster.

"Her late husband was a millionaire and owned a company, besides being a shareholder.

"After her husband's death earlier this year, all her husband's assets were handed over to her. (She then) used RM7,927,160 to get the lucky number," Shamsul said on Friday.

He said the victim had never met the man in person, as they became acquainted only through Facebook in July.

"After the first payment, the victim was asked to make further deposits in four different accounts for ‘personal and government tax costs.’

"However, the number that she was promised was not given, even though the last payment was made two months ago," Shamsul said.

The victim lodged a police report on Friday and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
