ALOR STAR: A 34-year-old man, who allegedly raped a psychiatric patient at a welfare home in Jitra, has been arrested by police at 6pm today.
Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said police managed to track down the suspect, who is also the welfare home operator, after the family of the 35-year-old victim lodged a report.
He said the suspect was picked up somewhere in the district and would be remanded tomorrow morning for further investigation under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.
"Initial investigations showed the suspect has a previous criminal record.
"However, he denied involvement in the rape case and insisted the woman was mentally ill," he said.
It was reported that the woman, who was sent to the home by her family last year, claimed that she was raped by the man.
However, the woman could not remember specifically when the alleged incident had taken place.
The family then referred her to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) yesterday and based on preliminary checks, found an old tear in her private parts.
It was learnt that the family took the woman home after the welfare house ceased its operations two weeks ago.
She is currently warded at the hospital for further examination and psychiatric treatment.
