Indonesian charged with neglect over death of toddler son in Penang

BUTTERWORTH: An Indonesian woman pleaded guilty at the sessions court here today to a charge of neglecting her 15-month-old son who developed severe injuries which led to his death last month.

The accused, identified only as Nisa, 26, made the plea when the charge was read to her before judge Noor Aini Yusof.

She is alleged to have neglected the child in a way which may have led to the physical injuries he suffered at their house in Paya Lahar Kepah, Kepala Batas, at about 4.30pm on Nov 22.

Nisa was charged under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum RM5,000 fine, or a maximum 20-year jail term, or both, upon conviction.

Noor Aini set Jan 5 next year for sentencing pending medical and post-mortem reports.

Nisa was unrepresented, while deputy public prosecutor Roslina Idris prosecuted.

No bail was offered.

On Nov 26, the New Straits Times reported that the toddler slipped into a coma after suffering brain haemorrhaging following suspected abuse by his own mother.

The child died while receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital’s intensive care unit on Nov 27.
