Police arrest 4 university students in Terengganu for trafficking cannabis

KUALA TERENGGANU: Four public higher learning institution students were arrested under suspicion of drug possession at their rented home in Kuala Nerus on Monday.

The suspects are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 for distributing drugs in the Kuala Nerus areas. They are believed to be in the possession of nearly a kilogramme of cannabis.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Idris Abdul Rafar said the suspects have been remanded for seven days until Dec 18 to facilitate police investigation.

Idris said the narcotics team from the Kuala Terengganu police station had raided the house at 10.30am. The raid came after several months of observation following a tip-off.

The students from Kelantan and Terengganu are aged between 21 and 24.

He said the students gave their full cooperation when the police raided that house at Jalan Mengabang Telipot near Kampung Padang Nenas.

Upon further checks, police found nearly one kilogramme of cannabis hidden inside one of the bedrooms.

“We managed to identify the main suspect who confessed to owning the drugs valued at RM3,000. We also seized another three ecstasy pills worth RM30 from one of the four youths,” he told reporters in a press conference on Wednesday.

Idris said all the suspects were taken to the Kuala Terengganu police station and all tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (active chemical in cannabis).

Investigations revealed that the main suspect, a 22-year-old from Kelantan, claimed that he had brought in the drugs from a neighbouring country through an illegal jetty in Kelantan.

He also had between eight and ten regular customers among his university’s friends.

The incident has since been raised to the university.

Idris added apart from the drugs, the team also seized a Proton Satria and RM400 in cash from the main suspect.

The seizure amounted to about RM10,000.

This is the district’s biggest cannabis haul and the second incident involving university students.
