Police using sign language interpreter to question Tanjung Sepat murder suspect

SHAH ALAM: Police have acquired the expertise of a sign language interpreter to help in questioning the man responsible for the Tanjung Sepat fire incident that killed a family of four on Dec 13.

The 38-year-old man, a furniture factory worker, who has a speech and hearing impairment, admitted to the committing the crime after he was arrested by a team of investigators from the Selangor police contingent Serious Crimes division in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 15.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said the case is still in progress as of today.

“Interrogation is expected to be completed as soon as possible. We are using the expertise of a sign language interpreter to help with interrogation,” he said.

Fadzil, however, declined to reveal further on the details and progress of investigations.

It was reported that the suspect had acted alone when an argument over financial matters, such as loans, was believed to have driven the man to set the home in Jalan Tepi Laut, Tanjung Sepat on fire.

The incident killed Chia Tee Nang, 73; his wife, Lim Mai Shak, 68; and their two grandchildren Wednesday morning.

The suspect, who is also the boyfriend of the elderly couple’s only daughter, was detained at a shoplot in Taman Pusat Kepong, where he lives on Dec 15.

He had earlier sought medical treatment at a private clinic in the Klang Valley shortly after the incident.

A seven-day remand was subsequently obtained from the Kuala Langat court.

Investigations are ongoing under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder after criminal elements were detected in the case.
