'Cikgu Azizan' discharged on charge of assaulting student; supporters cheer

SEREMBAN: Teacher Azizan Manap, 44, who made headlines for being accused of slapping a student in April this year, was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the Seremban magistrate’s court here today.

The move was greeted with cheers by hundreds of “Cikgu Azizan” supporters who had amassed outside the court.

Magistrate Mohd Zaki Abd Rahman made the decision after deputy public prosecutor Hazeelya Muhammad revealed that the prosecution had received instructions from the Attorney-General's Chambers to withdraw the charge.

According to the charge sheet, Azizan, who teaches at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Semarak Nilai, had allegedly assaulted an 11-year-old pupil at the school's assembly area on Apr 6, at 7am.

He was charged on Oct 31 at the magistrate’s court here under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for punishment for voluntarily causing hurt.

If found guilty, Azizan could have faced a year’s imprisonment, or a RM2,000 fine, or both.

Azizan was represented by lawyer Francis Pereira.
