Man jailed, fined for stealing Nutella chocolate spread at Tesco hypermarket

KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless father was sentenced to 14 days' jail and fined RM500 by the Ampang magistrate's court here for stealing four bottles of Nutella at a hypermarket on Wednesday.

Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali sentenced Mohd Azmin Mohamed Eid , 32, after the accused pleaded guilty today.

Azmin was charged with stealing four bottles of Nutella chocolate spread worth RM111.96 at Tesco hypermarket in Hulu Langat here around 2.50pm on Dec 20.

In pleading for leniency the unrepresented accused said he had to take care of his wife and child.

Deputy public prosecutor Norhashimah Hashim urged for a deterrent sentence.

"Stealing at hypermarkets is increasing and a stiff punishment should be imposed as a lesson not only to the accused but also to the public," she said.

The court ordered the accused to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest on Dec 20, and to serve another three months' jail if he failed to pay the fine.

According to facts, during the incident, Azmin had put three bottles of Nutella inside a sling bag he was carrying and went out through the cashier's counter without making payment.

The incident was caught on the hypermarket's closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera.
