KOTA BARU: Kelantan Customs Department detained a lorry driver and seized 5,400 cartons of smuggled cigarattes worth about RM86,400 in an operation yesterday.
State director Datuk Mohd Nasri Yusof said the lorry was detained at Batu 29 Jalan Kota Baru-Terengganu near Setiu about 3.40pm.
"A Customs team spotted the lorry when it passed the area and decided to stop the vehicle.
"Upon checking, they found the contraband and detained the man, in his 40s, " he told a Press conference at his office here today.
Nasir said initial investigation showed that the cigarettes were bought in Kuala Lumpur for distribution in the state.
He said that in another raid last week the department seized 8,410 cartons of smuggled cigarettes worth more than RM100,000 in Gua Musang.
However, the a lorry driver managed to escape.
