Penang cops nab man who allegedly slapped Muslim woman for not wearing headscarf

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man who allegedly slapped a foreign Muslim woman at a bus stop here for not wearing a headscarf has been nabbed.

Police detained the 30-year-old suspect for allegedly confronting a group of women at a bus stop at Taman Perwira earlier this month, and assaulting one of them for not wearing a ‘tudung.’

The woman, a 24-year-old Indonesian factory worker, finally came forward on Sunday to lodge a police report on the incident.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said that the man was detained at 10.30pm on Sunday near Jalan Taman Perwira.

“Upon initial interrogation, he admitted (to committing the offence).

“We have taken him to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital for health checks, before taking further action,” he said in a press statement on Monday.

A six-minute-and-twelve-second video of the incident, which went viral on social media over the past week, shows the man verbally abusing the woman before slapping her.

Meanwhile, the man’s uncle said he met with an accident 15 years ago and “has not been sane” since.
