KK police round up 26 people over immigration, narcotic offences

KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested 26 people, including 14 foreigners, in an operation at six locations in the city here on Sunday.

The six-hour operation, which began at 1am, was carried out as a joint-effort by 78 personnel from the Police Department, the Immigration Department, the Registration Department and City Hall.

About 70 people were inspected in the squatter areas of Luyang, Kolombong, Kampung Sinulihan and Kampung Kalansanan in Inanam; Kampung Cenderamata in Likas; and several spots in the state capital.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said 14 people were detained under the Immigration Act for lacking valid travel documents; while 12 others were arrested for offences related to narcotics.

"Those arrested are aged between 11 and 44.

"The operation was focussed on squatter areas with a high presence of illegal immigrants, as crime is likely to occur there," he said in a statement.
