Duo in Customs officer's arson case now with Klang police

KLANG: Two men who were arrested on suspicion of torching four cars belonging to a Customs officer and his family in Putrajaya on Jan 23, are now believed to have splashed red paint at the house of an officer of the same agency in Port Klang last December.

Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli said the two men were arrested on Sunday by Putrajaya police and subsequently remanded for three days to be probed under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

Shamsul said the duo, aged 48 and 49, have been handed over to his investigating officer today.

"They will be hauled to Klang magistrate's court tomorrow where we will seek a remand order. We will investigate them over the case where the house of the 47-year-old senior Customs officer was thrown with red paint on Dec 9.

"The officer had lodged a report at the Pandamaran police station after being informed by his children that their house was smeared with paint by two unknown men who wore full faced helmets.

"The officer believed that the incident may be due to his work as a Customs officer. He does not suspect anyone as he does not owe anything to any unlicenced money lenders.

"The two men may know of the incident at the officer's house," said Amar today, referring to loan sharks in Malaysia who were known to splatter red paint on borrower's home as warning to settle their debt.

In the incident, a pre-dawn fire engulfed a Mercedes Benz and a Perodua MyVi belonging to the family of Customs senior assistant director Nor Azman Mat Jini, 59, who is attached to the GST division.

Two other vehicles, a Proton Saga and a Honda CRV, were partially damaged.

Nor Azman, his wife, Noor Hayati Khairuddin, 57; their daughter and son-in-law as well as their two grandchildren, aged 2 and 6, were asleep when the fire broke out.

Police found the head of a hammer on the hood the Mercedes Benz, which was completely destroyed in the 3.30am fire, and a lighter on the floor at the scene.
